Southern Methodist University Excel Certification Requirement

Cox School of Business · MO-210

At SMU's Cox School, two first-year courses stand between a Business Direct student and admission to the major — and Excel Associate certification is built into that same first year.

Requirement details verified against SMU’s own pages on September 13, 2026. Always confirm your deadline with Cox School of Business.

What SMU requires

The SMU undergraduate catalog states that Business Direct students must complete BLI 1110, Business Discovery, and BLI 1210, Business Communications — Cox's two required foundation courses — and that students who do not fulfill these requirements by the end of their fourth regular term at SMU will not be admitted to the Cox School and must choose a non-business major. Internal transfer students complete the same two courses in their first year in Cox at a 3.500 GPA, and external transfer students at a 3.700 GPA.

Separately, SMU's own Cox School news describes what fills that same first year: first-years are required to take a course that teaches essential job skills, such as building a résumé, networking and becoming certified in Microsoft Excel. The catalog does not use the word Excel, but the University's own first-year advising guide, Peruna Passport, does — it lists BLI 1110/BLI 1210 in the sample first-term schedule for Business Direct and BBA Scholar students, and its term-by-term workshop calendar runs dedicated Excel Associate Exam Prep sessions and a Microsoft Office Certification Information Session through the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center on that same schedule.

SMU's own materials call the exam Excel Associate. The current Microsoft 365 Apps associate-level exam is MO-210, which is what our practice exams are built for.

Why passing on the first attempt matters

  • The BLI 1110/1210 deadline is not soft: SMU's own catalog says missing it means you are not admitted to the Cox School at all and must choose a non-business major — a change of major, not a delayed course.
  • The same deadline reaches every path into Cox, not just first-years: internal and external transfer students complete the identical two courses, at higher GPA bars (3.500 and 3.700).
  • SMU treats Excel Associate certification as real enough to build recurring A-LEC workshop sessions around it every fall and spring term, which is not effort a university spends on a credential nobody is expected to earn.
  • MO-210 is performance-based: you complete tasks in a live Excel workbook rather than answering multiple-choice questions about Excel. Reading about Excel does not prepare you for that.
The catalog's hard deadline is about two courses, not about an exam

What SMU's undergraduate catalog actually gates admission on is completing BLI 1110 and BLI 1210 by the end of your fourth term — that is where the firm, sourced consequence lives. The Microsoft Excel certification claim comes from two separate SMU sources: a Cox School news article, and the University Advising Center's Peruna Passport, which schedules Excel Associate Exam Prep workshops during that same first-year term. Neither of those ties the certification to the same pass/fail consequence as BLI 1110/1210 itself. Confirm with your BLI instructor or the Cox undergraduate advising office exactly how your section handles the exam before you assume it is graded the same way.

How we help you pass MO-210

Walk into A-LEC's Excel Associate Exam Prep already knowing where you stand

Our practice exams are timed, task-based and scored out of 1000 against a 700 pass mark, the same shape as the real exam. Your first one is free and needs no card — take it before your first A-LEC prep session so the workshop fills in what you actually need, not everything.

Graded on the workbook you actually built

You do the tasks in your own desktop Excel and upload the workbook. We grade what you did, task by task, and show you which tasks cost you points, so your next attempt is aimed at something specific instead of at studying Excel in general.

Written against Microsoft's published objective domain

Our MO-210 exams are built from the official skills-measured outline rather than from someone's recollection of the exam, and our exam guide reproduces the objective domains and their weightings so you can see what is actually tested.

Because SMU is in our own backyard, Excel Experts also offers 1-on-1, in-person test-prep training focused specifically on MO-210 and MO-211 — a tutor working through the same tasks the exam covers, not a generic Excel class. It is a separate, paid option alongside these free practice exams. Current pricing is posted at dfwexcel.com.

SMU Excel certification FAQ

What exactly does SMU require, BLI 1110/1210 or an Excel certification?

The catalog's hard, dated requirement is completing BLI 1110 and BLI 1210 by the end of your fourth regular term — miss that and you are not admitted to Cox. Becoming certified in Microsoft Excel is described separately, in SMU's own Cox School news and in the University's Peruna Passport advising guide, as part of that same first-year experience. Confirm with your BLI instructor exactly how your section treats the exam.

What happens if I don't complete BLI 1110 and BLI 1210 in time?

SMU's undergraduate catalog states that students who do not fulfill these requirements by the end of their fourth regular term at SMU will not be admitted to the Cox School and must choose a non-business major.

Does this apply to transfer students too?

Yes. Internal transfer students admitted to Cox complete BLI 1110 and BLI 1210 in their first year in Cox at a minimum 3.500 GPA, and external transfer students complete the same two courses at a minimum 3.700 GPA.

Which Excel exam is 'Excel Associate'?

SMU's own materials, including its A-LEC workshop schedule, call it Excel Associate. The current Microsoft 365 Apps associate-level exam is MO-210, which is what our practice exams are built for.

Where does SMU actually prepare students for the exam?

The Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center (A-LEC) runs dedicated Excel Associate Exam Prep sessions, usually in two parts, plus a separate Microsoft Office Certification Information Session, on a schedule that lines up with the term Business Direct and BBA Scholar students take BLI 1110/1210.

Is Excel Experts Certify affiliated with Southern Methodist University?

No. We are an independent Certiport Authorized Test Center and practice-exam provider in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Southern Methodist University or the Cox School of Business. Always confirm your own requirement with Cox undergraduate advising.
