Appalachian State University Excel Certification Requirement
Walker College of Business · MO-210
At Appalachian State, Excel certification is not a major-specific hoop — it is a condition of admission to the Walker College of Business itself. Here is what CIS 1060 requires, which exam it uses, and how to be ready for it.
Requirement details verified against App State’s own pages on September 16, 2026. Always confirm your deadline with Walker College of Business.
What App State requires
Appalachian State's Business Advising Center states that students on the 2019-2020 catalog and later — and earlier-catalog students who still need to satisfy it — are required to complete CIS 1060, Business Analytics Using Spreadsheet Technology, with a minimum grade of C-, to meet the Computer Proficiency requirement for admission to the Walker College of Business.
That requirement is not a side condition of a major, it is a condition of getting into the college at all. The Advising Center's own admission page describes entry to Walker College of Business as automatic once all requirements are met, with no separate application — so a student who does not clear CIS 1060's minimum grade is not admitted, regardless of the rest of their record.
The Department of Computer Information Systems, which teaches CIS 1060, describes it as 'a required course for Walker College of Business students' and states that students' scores come from 'the MOS Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps) certification' — naming the Microsoft 365 Apps associate-level exam directly. That exam is MO-210, not the Expert-level MO-211.
The scale is not small. The department's own account of a recent term states that 'over 800 App State students submitted their scores to Certiport' through CIS 1060 in a single semester — Certiport being the same provider that administers the official MO-210 exam everywhere it is offered.
At a glance
Why passing on the first attempt matters
- This is not a graduation-day surprise — it decides whether you are admitted to the Walker College of Business at all, before you can move ahead in most business majors.
- Because the exam sits inside a required course with a hard C- minimum, rather than being sold as optional prep, an unprepared attempt costs course standing, not just a testing fee.
- The volume App State itself reports — 800-plus students a semester submitting scores to Certiport — means CIS 1060 runs this exam as routine business, on a fixed course schedule rather than a rolling retake window.
- MO-210 is performance-based: you complete tasks in a live Excel workbook rather than answering multiple-choice questions about Excel. Reading about Excel does not prepare you for that.
The Business Advising Center's Computer Proficiency requirement is written as passing CIS 1060 with a C- or better; that page does not itself name an exam. It is the CIS department's own coverage of the course that names the specific certification — MOS Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps), the exam we build practice for, MO-210. Both pages are App State's own, and together they establish the same requirement from different angles. Confirm with your CIS 1060 instructor exactly how the exam factors into your grade for the section you are in.
How we help you pass MO-210
Our practice exams are timed, task-based, and scored out of 1000 against the same 700 pass mark MO-210 uses. Your first one is free and needs no card — take it before your CIS 1060 exam window opens.
You do the tasks in your own desktop Excel and upload the workbook. We grade what you did, task by task, and show you which tasks cost you points, so your next attempt is aimed at something specific instead of at studying Excel in general.
App State's own CIS department page names the MOS Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps) certification, which is MO-210. Our practice exams are built from Microsoft's published skills-measured outline for that exam, and our exam guide reproduces the objective domains and their weightings so you can see what is actually tested.
Everything we do runs in your own copy of Excel and is graded on the workbook you upload. There is no travel involved in practicing, whatever CIS 1060's own testing arrangement looks like this semester.
App State Excel certification FAQ
Do I have to pass an Excel exam to get into the Walker College of Business?
Not by name, according to App State's own admission policy — what the Business Advising Center requires is a minimum grade of C- in CIS 1060, Business Analytics Using Spreadsheet Technology. Separately, the department that teaches CIS 1060 describes the course as built around the MOS Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps) certification, which is the MO-210 exam.
Which Excel exam does CIS 1060 use?
MOS Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps), in the Department of Computer Information Systems' own wording describing the course — the current name for the MO-210 exam. It is not MO-211, the Expert-level exam.
What happens if I do not pass CIS 1060 with at least a C-?
Per the Business Advising Center, Computer Proficiency — completing CIS 1060 with a C- or better — is one of the requirements for admission to the Walker College of Business, and admission there is automatic once all requirements are met, with no separate application. Missing the grade means you are not admitted.
Does this apply to every business major at App State?
It applies to admission to the Walker College of Business as a whole, for students on the 2019-2020 catalog and later, and to earlier-catalog students who still need to satisfy it. Confirm your own catalog year and major's specific requirements with a Business Advising Center advisor.
How many students actually take this exam?
The Department of Computer Information Systems' own account of a recent term put the number at over 800 App State students submitting scores to Certiport through CIS 1060 in a single semester — a routine, high-volume exam at App State, not a rarely-used option.
Are you based near Boone?
No. We are a Dallas–Fort Worth area Certiport Authorized Test Center. Our practice exams themselves are entirely online and graded on the workbook you upload, so being outside DFW does not affect them.
